As a follow up to the Village of South Elgin Comprehensive Plan Update and Design Manual, Teska Associates was retained in 2005 to prepare conceptual design and construction documents for the Village's Gateway Plaza. Located in the heart of downtown, the Gateway Plaza is intended to showcase the streetscape finishes and selections which were the outcome of the Design Manual public process.
During the Design Manual public process, design themes were chosen to celebrate characteristics that are unique to the Village, such as the local quarries and historic trolley museum. As a result, large limestone boulders were hand selected at a local quarry to serve as the centerpiece of the plaza. Decorative light poles were selected to reference the overhead cables found in trolley construction. Site furnishings and landscape plantings provide additional comfort and buffering for the plaza.
