Similar to its south suburban Chicagoland neighbors, the Village of Steger is recovering from the loss of local industrial companies and employment centers to plan for future growth. A key focus of this planning is the downtown. In addition to being the center of government and community activity and a retail commercial center for many businesses, the downtown represents the sense of place which contributes to a positive community identity.
Teska Associates, Inc. and Business Districts, Inc. were engaged by the Village to develop the Village Center Strategic Action Plan. The plan is a creative and practical market-based plan which includes realistic action plans that the Village can pursue towards implementation. Key components of the plan include identification of site redevelopment opportunities, integration of a potential Metra commuter station, improvements to pedestrian and vehicular circulation, streetscape recommendations, and facade enhancements.
