Located in DeKalb, Illinois, Northern Illinois University is similar to most schools and universities in that careful planning and design must occur to handle their future growth. Aware of their need for future expansion, NIU hired Teska to show how sensible development should occur.
Teska prepared a Master Plan for approximately 100-acres of largely undeveloped land in the northern portion of the campus. The plan guides the future development of the North 40 for academic uses as well as preserving the unique environmental features of the site such as the existing flood plain, and native woodlands. Included in the development plans created by Teska designers are two 100,000 s.f. academic buildings, parking areas, and athletic facilities.
