The students at Sunnyside Elementary and MacArthur Middle School now have a safer walk to and from school thanks to a Teska designed streetscape improvement. As a follow up to the St. Charles Road Corridor Plan, Teska also assisted the Village of Berkeley with a detailed streetscape design for a 0.5-mile section of the corridor between Taft Avenue and Wolf Road. Part of this assignment included community signage and decorative barrier walls to guide pedestrian traffic for the areas in front of the School.

The streetscape plan was prepared in conjunction with the St. Charles Road improvement plan by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). Coordination with IDOT ensured that landscape improvements within the public rights-of-way were consistent with the St. Charles Road Corridor Plan. Streetscape enhancements within the public right-of-way include new concrete walkways, decorative accent corner paving and pedestrian crossings, decorative light poles, and new parkway plantings.

Coordination with property owners ensured that streetscape enhancements located within private properties and facing onto the corridor are also integrated into the plan. These elements include community signage, decorative barrier walls, and other decorative gateway features.
