APA-IL 2015 Implementation Award Recipient
The process was unique in engaging residents from a wide variety of backgrounds, from public housing residents to upper-income homeowners, on the Near North Side of Chicago and was led by the Near North Unity Program and Chicago Alderman Walter J. Burnett, Jr. with support from the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Chicago. The area is also in the midst of the redevelopment of Cabrini Green into a mixed-income community while market-rate pressures are bringing proposals for high-end and mixed-income buildings into the area.
Goals ranged from creating safe, positive opportunities for youth, seniors, and families, to connecting local businesses to local talent, to informing land use development decisions to meet community goals. Since the area is experiencing significant development pressures, the plan also included detailed design guidelines regarding site design, materials, signage, and set-backs that are now being used to review proposed new developments.
