Celebrating cyclists and pedestrians in Downtown Kankakee with improved streetscape design
Grounded in Kankakee's community-wide bike plan and extensive community input, the Schuyler Avenue streetscape plan reorganizes the roadway to replace some on-street parking with a continuous bike lane and add new seating and planters. Community members, local business owners, and stakeholders shaped the project from the beginning through construction, taking part in meetings, community events, and interviews.
Reconstructed sidewalks feature pergola swings, outdoor cafe seating, and in-ground planters with native plantings and custom planter benches. Gateway signage with the City logo welcomes visitors downtown. The result is a friendlier downtown for bikers and pedestrians.
